Ireland’s Top Bars Get in the Spirit for 2017 Sky Bar of the Year Awards A cocktail of finalists for the 2017 Sky Bar of the Year Awards have been revealed following over 140 inspections of bars, restaurants and watering holes country wide, from Donegal to Kerry, and a 12th annual boozy Awards Ceremony to announce the winners is just the tonic! With a national culture of drinking, amongst both the trendy and the traditional, as well as topical spirits like gin and whiskey making a strong resurgence, it’s no wonder the awards saw a 20% increase on last year’s entries, with over 100 of Ireland’s top bars and premises crafting the enviable shortlist. Mixing it up, to keep nominations fresh, this year five new categories were introduced, including Whiskey Bar of the Year, Restaurant Bar of the Year, Live Entertainment, Best Brand Representative and the Southern Comfort People's Choice Awards, giving the public the opportunity to award their own favourite drinking house in a provincial competition across Munster, Leinster, Ulster, Connacht and Dublin. The competition was strong this year and judges left stirred, with double the number of entries for the hotly contested Bushmills Cocktail Bartender of the Year Award. The Bushmills Live Cocktail Competition will be take place at a private event in Zozimus, Dublin on Monday 31st July. The awards aim to recognise much more than a punchy drinks menu, or the best brew but serves to promote straight up excellence in the Licensing Trade Industry, from cracking cocktails and innovative mixologists, to interiors, entertainment and customer service. Along with the coveted Best Sky Bar of the Year Award, which is chosen from the winner of each category, there are 25 categories in total. These include Tourist Bar of the Year, Best Designed Bar, Best Live Entertainment, Cocktail Bar of the Year, Craft Beer Bar of the Year and Best Newcomer. Ireland’s oldest and most traditional pubs and bars have an opportunity to shine, with The Stag’s Head, Toners and Kehoes all in the running from the Dublin scene, whilst long time favourite An Poitin Stil is a finalist within the Restaurant Bar of the Year category. 'The quality of the offering in the licensed trade sector was highlighted during the site visits for this year's awards. High quality products and services were on offer with evidence of increasingly enhanced customer experiences. It’s encouraging to see the pub trade in Ireland showing innovation, new product offerings and commitment to increased levels of customer service,’ said Gail Cotter, Bar Management Lecturer, CIT. The Southern Comfort People’s Choice is now open to public vote. It will be carried out provincially in Dublin, Leinster, Munster, Connacht/Ulster. Provincial and overall winners will be announced on the night of the awards. To vote for your favourite bar, go to http://licensingworld.ie/public-vote/
